Antichrist

Where does the term “Antichrist” occur in the Bible?

While in popular religion the Antichrist is often associated with the book of Revelation, the literal term is found exclusively in the epistles of John (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 1:7).

John uses the term primarily as a doctrinal warning against false teachers, describing the Antichrist as a deceiver and a liar who denies the Father and the Son (1 John 2:22) and does not acknowledge Jesus Christ as having come in the flesh (2 John 1:7). At the time of writing, John speaks of the spirit of Antichrist as already being in the world (1 John 4:3) and notes that many antichrists (plural) had already come (1 John 2:18). Furthermore, he considered his own time to be “the last hour” (1 John 2:18).

While the specific term is unique to John’s letters, the Antichrist is frequently conflated with other adversarial biblical figures, such as the Beast from the Sea in Revelation 13, the Man of Lawlessness in 2 Thessalonians 2, and the Little Horn in Daniel chapters 7 and 11.
